Every Outbound Moto tour runs on the KTM 790 Adventure. This page sets out what you'll be riding: how the bike is set up, what comes with it, how it's looked after, and what happens if something goes wrong on the road.
The Bike
Both routes, Cape2Karoo and Frontier & Mist, are ridden on the KTM 790 Adventure. You collect your bike in St Francis Bay and ride the same machine for the whole tour. The bikes are set up for one rider, and pillions aren't permitted.
If you haven't ridden a 790 before, use the handover to get to know the controls and how the bike feels with its luggage on, and ask us about anything you're unsure of before you set off.
How It's Set Up
- A rack-less soft pannier system, 60 litres in total, split into three 20-litre compartments
- A Garmin zūmo XT2 GPS with the full route loaded, so you select each day's route in the morning and follow it
- Tubeless tyres, so a puncture can be plugged at the roadside without removing the wheel

What Comes With It
- A tyre plug kit, and a tyre pressure gauge and pump
- A small tool kit for adjustments
- Duct tape, cable ties and blue thread-locker
Minor roadside fixes are the rider's job: plugging a puncture, tightening a loose bolt, securing something with a cable tie. That's what the kit is there for. On a self-guided tour there's also no one riding with you to help lift the bike if it goes over, so ride within your limits.
How It's Looked After
Every bike is serviced by the KTM dealer according to KTM's factory service schedule. On top of that, we run our own checks on each bike before every tour, so it's ready for the journey ahead of it.
If Something Goes Wrong
You can reach us 24/7. Here's what happens when you call:
- We ask questions to diagnose the problem and try to talk you through a fix over the phone.
- If that doesn't work, we drive out with the spare motorcycle on a trailer, plus tools and spare parts.
- When we reach you, we either repair your bike on the spot or swap it for the spare.
We respond immediately. How long it takes us to reach you depends on how far you are from base.
Who Rides It
Riders must be at least 25 and have held a full motorcycle licence for at least two years. Both routes are around 70% gravel, so you should be comfortable handling a loaded adventure motorcycle on unpaved roads. Neither route is for beginners.
